The nationwide study found that the number of healthy days per year that Americans lose due to obesity has more than doubled over the past two decades, from about 7.5 in 1993 to 17 in 2008.
“Over the past several decades, obesity has increased faster than anyone could have imagined it would,” CDC director Dr. Thomas R. Frieden said during a noon press conference Tuesday. “Obesity has doubled in adults and tripled in children. We need intensive and ongoing efforts to address obesity, or more people will get sick and die from the complications of obesity, such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes and cancer.”
Initiatives needed to fight the obesity epidemic, according to Frieden, include:
- Increase in physical activity.
- Increased breast-feeding of infants.
- Eating more fruits and vegetables.
- Cutting TV and computer time.
- Reducing intake of high-calorie foods, particularly sugary drinks.
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 39 percent of black women and 31 percent of black men are now obese. Hispanics, with an obesity rate of 29 percent, tend to be slightly more obese than whites, at 24 percent, according to the CDC. But the amount of lost healthy time was about the same for both groups in the study.
Low Carb-, Low-Fat Diets Tied for Long-Term Weight Loss
A new two-year study suggests that it may not matter in the long run: When combined with extensive guidance about eating and exercise, people lost about the same amount of weight whether they were on an Atkins-style, low-carbohydrate diet or a traditional low-fat diet.
“In general, dieters should be less concerned about what diet they’re on and more focused on finding strategies to stick to the diet they chose,” advised study author Gary D. Foster, director of the Center for Obesity Research & Education at Temple University.

the increase on the number of obese people not only in the US but in the most part of the world is really alarming. its also remarkable that even kids suffer from obesity. i think its also because of their lifestyle and the foods they are eating. too much eating and less exercise i guess are the common reason for obesity.
i believe that it does affect one’s quality of life because its a risk to their health and some have some difficulties in doing their daily activities thus affects their productivity at work as well, it even affects one’s self esteem.
i guess its best that we should do something about it already, live and eat healthy, do exercise and it ill bring a lot of benefits to us.
