The American Diabetes Association recommends that patients aim for a small but consistent weight loss of 1 to 2 pounds per week. Most patients should follow a diet that supplies at least 1,000 – 1,200 kcal/day for women and 1,200 – 1,600 kcal/day for men.

In most cases, the onset of Type 2 diabetes is brought on by excessive weight gain  and lack of exercise. Children as well as adults are increasingly at risk due to sedentary lifestyles coupled with unhealthy eating habits. However, the causal link between excessive weight and Type 2 diabetes  was unknown until Dr. Barbara B. Kahn of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center co-authored a study that revealed the missing link.

People with type 2 diabetes have a condition called insulin resistance. They’re able to make insulin but their bodies can’t use it properly to move glucose into the cells. So the amount of glucose in the blood rises. The pancreas then makes more insulin to try to overcome this problem. Eventually, the pancreas can wear out from working overtime and may no longer be able to produce enough insulin to keep blood glucose levels within a normal range.

Certain diabetes drugs, such as sulfonylureas, thiazolidinediones, meglitinides, and insulin, are associated with weight gain, too. However, the blood-sugar-lowering benefits of these drugs outweigh the risks of gaining weight. (Others, such as Byetta and metformin, may result in weight loss).

There are many advantages to losing weight (and not just diabetes-related ones):

  • Boost your energy level
  • Lower your cholesterol levels (especially important for people with type 2 diabetes)
  • Protect your heart (also important for people with diabetes, since heart-related complications are very common)
  • Make it easier to control your blood glucose level

Type 2 diabetic patients should specially focus on weight control and should do so by setting a target for themselves. This will reduce any risks for heart disease. A 7% or more is an achievable target.

Actually, I think the amount of weight someone should lose in a week varies depending on exactly “how” obese the person is. I’ve watched the show “The Biggest Loser” a lot, and although their exercise regiment is extreme, when someone is excessively obese, often times their extreme weight is kept in place because of the high volume of bad food they are consuming, including sugary drinks like diet pepsi and other soft drinks. Simply substituting the bad drinks and food with water, good food, and some form of basic exercise could cause these individuals to lose over 3 pounds a week. Also, I’ve tried consuming less than 1,600 calories per day and for an active male adult this can be VERY difficult, I think it’s less important how many calories you are consuming and more important that you are consuming healthy foods and getting exercise that builds muscle.
